ENDOSYMBIOTIC THEORY

    The primitive eukaryote that the ancestral prokaryote in the diagram evolved to is plant cell - you can tell because it has a developed chloroplast and mitochondria in the second cell.

  2. Wait, I'm kind of confused. The cell that ingests the aerobic bacteria and photosynthetic bacteria - is this an ancient anaerobic prokaryote before it ingests them? Also, for the extra credit, I'm kind of puzzled on what we should label as the animal-like and plant-like protists. Are the primitive aerobic eukaryotes and primitive photosynthetic eukaryotes protists?

  3. The ancestral prokaryote in the diagram evolved into a primitive plant cell because it has both mitochondria and chloroplasts.
    I got both questions in the quiz correct. The narration was pretty helpful, but it said that a primitive eukaryote ingested the prokaryotes that evolved into the chloroplasts and mitochondria. So does that mean that the cell that ingested the bacteria was a eukaryote? I thought it was another prokaryote that was anaerobic.

  5. Yes, the cell that ingests the aerobic bacteria (but does not digest it, therefore it develops into the mitochondria) is the ancient anaerobic bacteria. Recall that anaerobic cells develop before aerobic cells because Oxygen wasn't present in the early earth.

    NOTE: the primitive eukaryotes develop into the plant cells and plant-like protists (if they have chloroplasts and mitochondria) and into animal cells and animal-like protists (if they only have mitochondria). Use the notes to get examples of diagrams!!!!

  6. Thanks Anjelika! You are right!!! the narrator makes a mistake when he calls the ancient cell that engulfs the aerobic bacteria (future mitochondria)a eukaryote.

  7. i heard the narrator say that too and i got very confused after what we had learned in class so i looked back at my notes and found out that he made a mistake!
